Wines
James and Ann purchased their plot of land just outside Martinborough village in 2000. By 2001 they had planted 9 hectares with 8,000 pinot noir vines and 1000 olive trees. They left a strip in the middle where they now have their home, a studio, tasting room, winery and a burgeoning garden.
They chose the terroir for its heavy silts and clays over tight river gravels. Irrigation is limited. The vines produce small intense fruit that has become the signature of their vineyard. Minimal intervention and the application of sustainable practices ensure the ultimate quality of their wine. Picking is done by hand, the timing carefully judged based on flavour and proportion of shrivel.
Traditional wine making methods are used with careful selection of yeasts to express the character of the handpicked and basket pressed fruit. Wine maker, James Walker, creates heavenly rich dark fruitful wines with passion and commitment allowing the nature of the terroir and the seasons to be expressed. Brodie Estate is now into its fourth vintage. The wines continue to delight with their depth and richness. The cellar door provides the opportunity to taste and buy. Participation on their web site is invited.
